Bumper calendar for Women’s Month

Departments within the City of Cape Town’s Community Services and Health Directorate are planning a range of activities to celebrate Women’s Month.

'August is more than a look back at history. While we commemorate the immense sacrifice of the women who went before us, it is also a reminder to celebrate our milestones as women and our extraordinary roles in society. It is an opportunity for us to acknowledge each other and our contributions,' said Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

Departments within the directorate will host a number of special events aimed at women of all ages.

'There are opportunities at our facilities throughout the year for women to become empowered, gain information and join in our many programmes. If you haven't yet, make this August the month where you sign up and join thousands of women who are leading the charge in our communities,' said Councillor Van der Ross.

Below are some of the events taking place during August:

7 August	Uitsig Clinic	Community outreach focused on creating awareness of women's health concerns.
8 August	Maitland Library	Morning coffee with the Friends of the Library.
8 August	Khayelitsha Community Hall opposite the library	Khayelitsha Public Library will host a senior's Women's Day celebration called #doekonfleek.
8 August	Adriaanse Clinic Valhalla Park Clinic Elsies River Clinic	Community outreach focused on creating awareness of women's health concerns.
8 August	Site B Community Hall	Women's Day event.
9 August 09:00 – 13:00	Weltevreden Clinic	Women's Day Event
9 August 12:00	Phambili Broadlands, Strand	Women's Day Event.
9 August 09:00 – 15:00	Monwabisi Recreation Centre, Langa	Junior Netball Tournament: The tournament features teams from four Langa primary schools and provides an opportunity for them to hone their netball skills.
9 August	Artscape	Women participating in Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department's programmes will attend Artscape's annual Humanity Arts Festival.
10 August	Gordon's Bay Library	All women are invited to celebrate Women's Day in a session of foot stomping and beating of the drums.
10 August	St Vincent Clinic Delft South Clinic	Community outreach focused on creating awareness of women's health concerns.
11 August	Brooklyn Library Hall	A Women's Month programme focusing on empowerment. Talks arranged by the Community Intervention Centre and Albow Garden Clinic. Booking is essential on 021 444 5944.
11 August	Netreg Clinic	Community outreach focused on creating awareness of women's health concerns.
15 August	Nyanga Junction and Lansdowne Corner malls	Clinic staff will visit the malls to encourage women to go for Pap smears. These are free at City clinics.
17 August	Scottsdene Clinic	Women's Day event.
19 August	Banqueting Hall, Cape Town Civic Centre	SDECD will host 150 women aged 14-35 years old who are participating in organisational projects from across the city. The focus of the programme is on services available to adolescents and young women experiencing any form of trauma including gender based violence.
22 August	Eikendal	Celebrating Women's Day with residents of a homeless shelter.
22 August	KTC Hall	Screening and promoting Pap smears.
26 August 09:00 – 15:00	Monwabisi Recreation Centre, Langa	5km Seniors Walk for Women and Golden Games is aimed at encouraging the elderly to stay fit, active, and connected to their communities.
26 August	Oliver Tambo (O.R.) Indoor Centre, Khayelitsha	The 5km fun run is for everyone and following the walk, a mass aerobics session and a netball development programme for sub-area clubs' U12, U14, and U18 teams will be held.
26 August	Mew Way Hall	Women's Day event focused on women's health.
30 August	Albow Gardens CDC	Women's Day event focused on women's health.
